International Women’s Day 2017

Happy International Women’s Day! I am so very lucky to have grown up in a time and place where I never doubted that a woman can do anything she sets her mind to. I was in Girl Scouts from kindergarten through twelfth grade (and was a Gold Award recipient) and I feel like that was a very empowering experience as a girl. One kind of silly but important memory that has stuck with me is a song we would sing at camp (I loved camp. Loved. I’ve mentioned that before, but feel obligated to make that statement anytime the subject of camp comes up) called “Can a Woman”. It is sung to the tune of “She’ll be Coming ‘Round the Mountain”. Abby, dressed in her Junior Girl Scout uniform that is identical to the one I had, will be helping me to illustrate the finer points of the song, along with some of my other girls who are champions of fairness and equality throughout herstory.

Can a woman fly an airplane?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman build a building?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman fight a fire?

Can a woman change a tire?

Can a woman lead a choir?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman be a lawyer?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman fix an engine?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman be a drummer?

Can a woman be a plumber?

Can she play ball in the summer?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman be a doctor?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman be a farmer?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Can a woman lead a nation?

Can she run a TV station?

Can she head a corporation?

Yes she can, yes she can!

Just you wait until we’re older

Then you’ll see, then you’ll see!

We’ll be women in tomorrow’s

History, history!

As we grow up through the years

We’ll sing out loud and clear

Can we start the process here?

Yes we can, yes we can!

(I learned this song by rote and wasn’t aware of its origins as a kid, but a Google search tells me that it was written by Iris Hirsch of GS Central Maryland)

Happy International Women’s Day!

  4. I don’t remember this song but that means nothing. I only remember some of them. I do know our leaders pushed us to do any job we wanted by hardwork. I was, always told by my Daddy I could do any job. I told him the President didn’t make enough money, but I would be an astronaut. I didn’t do that one. I never went to college but learned on the job. Too bad we waited to learn about those smart, females who put the first man in space. I think we would have many more females in math & science. I do believe that girls can do anything. One of my GS friends is a doctor, an Masters in English, & I’m sure the others were up there, too. I know they went to college. I do know I loved camp. One was freezing cold during Spring break. I still miss those days. I once had a Daisy troop. One of my great nieces is a GS. They do many fun things

So awesome! I loved this! I’ve never heard this song before. I loved all of your doll’s interpretations of it. And yes, a woman can do absolutely anything she puts her mind to! What a lucky time to be alive, and to be a woman. 🙂
