Spoiler alert: I will be mentioning some of the events in Nanea’s books if you haven’t had a chance to read them yet.
If you’ve read Nanea’s books, you know how determined she was to help the war effort. Part of the reason she wanted to come up with service projects to do with her friends was to prove that her friend Donna was “essential” and would not have to leave Hawaii. Sadly, this did not work and Donna still had to leave, but the culmination of Nanea’s efforts resulted in the creation of the Honolulu Helpers. The Honolulu Helpers were made up of Nanea and her friends and were committed to doing service projects to help the war effort. They made Valentines for soldiers, passed out cookies at USO events, and continued to collect bottles for the Red Cross for blood donations, which was a project initially started by Nanea, Lily, and Donna, earning them a photo and an interview with the paper.
Every good organization has a uniform, and the club’s very first action when forming was to decide that they would wear white dresses (because everyone already had one) and red neck scarves (because they could easily make them). I decided my Nanea definitely needed a Honolulu Helper uniform, and just like in the story, the white dress was easy because I already had one in my collection and the scarf was easy to make.
Nanea proudly put on her uniform today and grabbed her wagon to collect bottles.
She only has one so far, but I know she will keep working hard to fill the wagon and “dip her paddle in”!
