I am so excited to share a big project I have been working on for a while now: Kirsten’s cabin! I wanted to do this because I have so many great doll accessories, but no real way to display them…my dolls need a place to live! There are so many great doll houses out there that are so inspiring, but I decided to take this project in a slightly different direction. I hope to eventually make a bedroom for each of my dolls, but I just really don’t have the space for 12 different doll bedrooms. I decided to create Kirsten’s cabin in a way that is completely collapsible and can be easily stored. The walls are just plywood with hinges, making a trifold (again, thank you to my amazing husband…seriously, he deserves a medal). I painted it to look like a log cabin and then furnished it. That was the fun part! I’ve had Kirsten’s bed since I’ve been little. My grandpa made it for me for Christmas, painstakingly copying the design from the catalogue. He made it from a cedar tree that had been removed from my parents’ property and it smelled so good and looked so beautiful that I just never had the heart to paint it blue like Kirsten’s actual bed. Kirsten doesn’t mind that it’s natural instead of blue. 🙂 My mom made the quilt to go with it as well as Sari. I don’t have Kirsten’s washstand and am not up for paying eBay prices for it right now, so I bought a little jewelry box from Michael’s and painted it blue. I think I will try to replicate the painted heart designs on it at some point. Virtually everything else that is a non-AG item is from Goodwill or a flea market.
I’m not completely done, and probably never will be. I will definitely keep adding to it as I accumulate more stuff. I did make curtains for the window, but haven’t found a way to hang them yet that looks good. I’ll keep working on it. I also tried a couple of different arrangements, as you can see.
I think Kirsten is very happy!
Wow! What an a-mazing husband you have! I too don’t have any room for an actual doll room so I use 4 scenes and settings AG made a long time ago. They’re collaspable and nice because you can use the different scenes to have different rooms.
Kirsten’s bed is utterly adorable. I have seen broken Kirsten washstands on ebay for very reasonable prices. Maybe your husband might be able to fix it if you bought one? 🙂

I think I love this more than Kirsten does. (And she probably loves it A LOT!;) )

Thanks so much! Yes, he is pretty wonderful! You always do such a great job at making those AG scenes work really well for your photo shoots. My mom has Samantha’s, but I haven’t used them too much. I thought about getting Molly’s and Kirsten’s and still might someday, but I’m having fun creating my own for now. I haven’t actually looked for the washstand in a while, so good tip. I will have to take a look.

Kirsten looks just beautiful in her cabin. The bed is very very special. One of my favorite pictures is the one with the honey behind her. Its wonderful to be able to put up a period display to show off all the unique things about a doll’s story.

Thanks Jen! Yes, that’s probably my favorite thing about American Girl–how all the little accessories help to tell a story!

This is so cool! I love that it’s something you can store easily too, I know I’ve been thinking I’d like something like this once I live in a space that would have room for it, but picking which character to theme it after always seemed tricky. This is a really clever solution! Do you have plans for who your next project would be for?

Thanks Gwen! Yes, I felt the same way for a while when I was looking at pictures of doll houses. They are all so cool, but I really didn’t want a “one size fits all” for my dolls since I like to keep mine true to their character and time period. Molly’s bedroom is next! I should have it done within the next few weeks!

This is so fabulous! I made a similar room-thing on a smaller scale that I could use for any doll, but I love your log cabin walls! And your window puts mine to shame! Way to go!

Love it! I hear you on the space issue, I was just saying I wish I had more space to put more bedrooms in, but no such luck.
Kirsten’s bed is awesome, and I agree on the smell thing, I’d be picking it up and sniffing it every time I walked past. I think it’s great how it is not only handmade, but out of a tree you “knew”.

You should! It was pretty easy. I used plywood, but if you don’t have the necessary power tools I bet that pieces of foam poster board would work well!
